If you are looking for a sushi hit or other Japanese delights before boarding, you’ll be pleased to know that Itacho Sushi has a restaurant at Hong Kong International Airport (Departures West Hall, Level 6, Terminal 1, Restricted Area).
Itacho Sushi is famed for its use of the freshest ingredients, the meticulous cooking skills and the beautiful presentation of each dish. Also, being a vegetarian I love the choice of food that is on offer.
Although Itacho Sushi is a sushi shop, they offer a lot of other hot and cold dishes. But to kick off the proceedings, I decided to plump for two hand-rolled sushi: the Corn Salad Hand Roll and Egg Hand Roll. The filling was mixed with Japanese mayo dressing and shredded cucumber. These rolls were simply oishi (Japanese for delicious)!
Next I had the Cold Green Tea Soba Noodles. Soba noodles are made from buckwheat flour, and are thin in shape, unlike udon which are thick. Here, the soba noodles are cooked al dente and have a lovely green tea flavor. They are served chilled with a special dipping soy sauce. The proper way of eating cold soba noodles is to first add the daikon radish, green onions and wasabi to the soy sauce, then use your chopsticks (no fork, sorry…) to pick up a good chunk of noodles, then dip them into the sauce and simply eat away. This is a very tasty dish indeed, I would highly recommend it.
The Pumpkin & Sweet Potato Tempura is also a must-try. Although battered and deep fried, this dish is not at all greasy – the batter is light and crisp – wonderful! Last but not least on my hit list was my beloved Hot Spring Egg (Onsen Tamago) – the egg white has the texture of a delicate custard while the yolk comes out firm, but retains the color and creamy texture of a soft cooked yolk. It looks a simple dish but both boiling time and temperature need to be precise and are extremely hard to master. I demolished this in seconds…swallowed it in one… It was HEAVEN!
Other vegetarian dishes I recommend at Itacho Sushi are: the Seaweed Salad, Pumpkin & Cheese Croquette, Roasted Tamago, and the Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables.
