I’ve always been a fan of the Maxim’s Group, especially their Jade Garden restaurant…which I didn’t realize has been around for over 40 years. Jade Garden has been my family’s favorite go-to place for “yam cha” for as long as I can remember. But in recent years, due to work commitments I haven’t been eating out with my parents half as much as I would like.
So, it was lovely to have a proper catch up the other night with my whole family as a farewell for my nephew who was leaving for boarding school in Scotland. Given our family history It was no surprise that my dad picked Maxim’s Jade Garden (located at Level 8 of the Departures Check-in Hall Mezzanine, Terminal 1 of Hong Kong International Airport) for my nephew’s send-off,.
Inside the décor is stylish, but I really love their red paper table mats (don’t laugh)! The menu is authentic Cantonese cuisine showcasing the best dim sum and local Guangdong dishes. And even better Jade Garden uses no MSG at all!
Even though I’m the only vegetarian in the family, there are no complaints as they all love the veggie appetizers as much as I do. We ordered the Preserved Eggs & Pickled Pink Ginger – the eggs were perfectly soft in the middle whereas the ginger had just the right kick even for my mom’s liking. Next up was the Braised Bean Curd Sheet Rolls. Don’t be deceived by their appearance…on arrival they looked nonenticing but were surprisingly tasty, and I would definitely say a must try!
Onto the main course, we plumped for Jade Garden’s signature Braised Bamboo Pith Rolls. The bamboo pith was scrumptious, filled with black fungi, carrots and mushrooms, served with Chinese wolfberries and green soybeans on the side, making it not only a beautiful dish but a healthy one. The Marinated Cucumber and the Fried Egg White with Tomato are also great vegetarian choices.
It’s true what they say: time flies when you’re having a good time. Before we knew it, it was time to say goodbye to my nephew who had a plane to catch. We all really miss him, but thanks to Maxim’s Jade Garden, it was a perfect and warm send-off.
