TamJai SamGor is the inventor of the hot and numbing soup mixian, concocted back in the nineties and it’s so delicious that TamJai SamGor had to keep opening new restaurants to keep up with demand: they now have over 40 restaurants across Hong Kong.
Mixian is a type of rice noodle from the Yunnan Province of China served in a soup usually spicy in flavor. And like cart noodles, TamJai SamGor allows you to choose your own ingredients for your mixian. But here comes the “wow” factor – their soup base has up to NINE different degrees of spiciness to choose from to challenge those taste buds! No wonder TamJai SamGor was chosen as a “Bib Gourmand Restaurant” by the Michelin Guide for three years in a row (2011-2013).
But for me, the standout feature is the recent launch of their vegetarian soup base often so difficult to find on menus in noodle restaurants which normally offer pig bone broth as a soup base for this type of dish. So, when I was at Hong Kong International Airport, the other day, I had to visit the TamJai SamGor outlet (located at Level 5, Terminal 2) to try as much of their food as I could!
TamJai SamGor’s special vegetarian broth alone with its delightful flavor is worth a visit and if you like spicy, their signature Hot & Sour Soup, Hot & Numbing Soup, and Hot Pepper Soup can all be “vegetarianized” using this vegetarian broth. There are also up to ten vegetarian ingredients to choose from. I plumped for the succulent shiitake mushrooms, bean curd puffs, black fungus, bean curd sheets and the bamboo pith rolls. These ingredients allowed all the wonderful juices of the soup to be mopped up and it was so good!
Other than the vegetarian broth, TamJai SamGor has also launched several vegetarian snacks including Tomatoes in Italian-Chuan Style, Black Fungus in Italian-Chuan Style, plus cucumber, soybean sprouts, lotus root and preserved eggs, all marinated with different kinds of special sauces and all simply mouth-watering!
But please note the vegetarian broth is only offered after 3 p.m. at each TamJai SamGor outlet, nevertheless this is already a great step for vegetarian mankind. Thank you SamGor!
